Mas Tequila: Sammy Hagar's Cabo Wabo Coming to Times Square
October 12, 2018 | by James Greene, Jr.
Start spreadin' the news — former Van Halen front man Sammy Hagar is opening the first East Coast location of his Cabo Wabo Cantina next Spring at 725 Eighth Avenue in Manhattan. Hagar's lease is for ten years, so if all goes to plan New Yorkers will have a steady stream of lobster burritos and tequila shrimp until 2029. The original Cabo Wabo opened in Cabo San Lucas in 1990; since then, Hagar's expanded to Hollywood, Las Vegas, and Lake Tahoe.
Previously this Eighth Avenue space had been leased to Wahlburgers, but Marky's grease palace wasn't even open for business yet when they fell behind on rent in Fall of last year. This prompted the landlord to change the locks. A Wahlburgers in Coney Island shuttered around the same time but re-opened last July (thank god, right?).
Another fact to set your mind at ease: there will probably be a stage for live music at the Times Square Cabo Wabo Cantina. If you're lucky, maybe the Red Rocker himself will jump up there and bang out a few Van Hagar classics while you're suckin' down tortilla soup.
